Introduction
After you’ve cleaned your car, it’s time to polish. Polishing is a great way to bring out the shine on your paint and make it look like new again. But before you start polishing, there are a few things that need to be done first. We’re going to show you how to detail your car with claybar and polishing compound.
Step 1
What is a clay bar?
A clay bar is a solid block of natural or synthetic clay that is used to remove surface contaminants from your vehicle’s paintwork. The unique properties of the clay allow it to attract and capture these contaminants through capillary action, leaving your car clean and smooth as new.
How does it work?
Clay bars are applied directly onto the paintwork and rubbed in small circles until they become full of debris. When this happens, you simply rinse off your wheel with water (or in some cases with an automotive-grade lubricant) and then wipe dry using a microfiber towel. The process takes only minutes—and as much as several hours if you’re working on larger vehicles—but it will leave your car looking better than its original factory finish!
Step 2
- Use a clay bar to remove contaminants from the surface of your car. A clay bar is a soft, squishy bar that you can use to remove contaminants from the surface of your car (see the image below). Clay bars are available at your local auto parts store, or you can buy one online if you prefer to have it delivered right to your doorstep.
Step 3
- Use a clay bar to remove paint overspray, tree sap, and other contaminants from the vehicle’s surface.
A clay bar is a cloth covered in a lubricant that makes it easy to remove contaminants from your vehicle’s paint by sliding them off rather than rubbing them away. To use it, simply rub the bar over the area you want to clean until any residue has been removed.
Step 4
- Use the clay bar in a slow motion, moving it back and forth across the paint surface. Do not use any pressure on the clay bar—just let it glide across your vehicle’s paintwork. Be careful not to touch any painted areas that are not yet covered by the towel or plastic wrap (if you’re using them). If you do accidentally get some paint on an area that should be protected, wipe it off immediately with a microfiber cloth, being sure to apply no pressure whatsoever (you don’t want to scratch up your car).
For newbies: The trick is not just rubbing in one direction; rather, use circular motions while applying very light pressure over the entire surface of your car’s paint job. This will help ensure that all contaminants are removed safely without causing any damage!
Step 5
After you have used the clay bar, wipe off any residue with a clean microfiber towel. Check for any remaining residue, and if there is any, repeat steps 2-4.
Take time to do this.
You’ll need to take your time and do this properly. You will find that the results are worth it, and your car will look better for it. You may also find that cleaning the car afterwards is easier since you won’t be fighting the build-up of dirt on the surface of the paintwork!
